With 61 percent of the nation's people suffering from one of the worst health epidemics of our generation - obesity - there is no shortage of people in need of our professional knowledge and services. As a certified diabetes educator and dietitian in an outpatient setting, I discovered weight management to be the first step in treating many other illnesses; but I also realized that two or three visits with me were not enough to treat the problem. With this realization, I began to search for a long-term solution to this serious healthcare problem, a solution that was scientifically based and affordable enough for the average person to attend a sufficient length of time to truly make a difference. There are many "diet specialists" peddling their wares to already confused consumers; but my goal was to teach clients how to eat and live, not how to diet.

With these goals in mind, FortHealthSource was initiated with all of the components listed by the National Task Force on Obesity as mandatory for a successful weight loss and maintenance program.

  • A means by which clients monitor food intake
  • Methods of stimulus control
  • A systematic approach to creating a healthy environment
  • A focus on well-being and healthful behavior patterns
  • Stress management techniques
  • Social support
  • Incorporation of physical activity
  • Relapse prevention strategies

Fifty thought-provoking lessons and 12 creative and motivating demonstrations guide dietitians along the FortHealthSource path. Each manual, also available in CD-ROM format, provides the dietitian with EVERYTHING needed to initiate and implement a cost-effective weight management program, including detailed orientation instructions, advertisements and a PowerPoint orientation presentation; guides for teaching classes and conducting demonstrations; promotional materials such as a patient booklet and business card templates; patient assessments; daily and weekly food records; correspondence to doctors and/or other healthcare professionals; supplemental resources; all printing forms with personalization available; and a detailed step-by-step guide for setting up and implementing your own FortHealthSource program. The goal of this program is to create an INDEFINITE healthy lifestyle with periodic assessment and adjustment in diet, exercise and behavior.

"I was struggling with the progression of complications from Type I Diabetes when I was introduced to the FortHealthSource program nine months ago. Through following the valuable guidance, education and support provided by director Anny Miller, I am pleased to say that my cholesterol level has already decreased by 38 points and my HbA1c, an indicator of long-term blood glucose levels, has made a dramatic drop and is now the best it has ever been.

The FortHealthSource literature and class discussions provide much more than just a list of what to eat and what to avoid. We have received much valuable information on how to live healthy lives and how to enjoy the process."
